Water Treatment | Moinhos Ambiente

Water is the most precious thing on the planet …

But, not all available water is naturally suitable for human consumption or for industrial consumption.
Increasingly, both by demographic intensity and by industrial development and agriculture, the quantity and quality of fresh water available on our planet is under constant pressure.

It is one of the specialties of the Moinhos Água e Ambiente Group.

Surface waters (rivers, reservoirs, lakes), groundwater (wells and wells), brackish water or seawater.

Moinhos Água e Ambiente can offer a unique technology for water treatment that can make drinking water as well as adopt a multiprocessing approach that integrates several phases of treatment using various technologies, whether conventional or state-of-the-art (Ozone , UV, Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis, Generation of hypochlorous acid “in situ”).

According to the characteristics of the water to be treated, Moinhos Água e Ambiente can resort to several processes, operations and associated technologies.

Households (low flow) and units for small settlements (hospitals, buildings, hotels, small remote settlements) to large integrated municipal and industrial systems.

  • Oxidation and Adsorption Processes in Activated Carbon
  • Clarificação
  • Osmose e Dessalinização
  • Permuta Iónica e Precipitação Química
  • Desinfeção

Sometimes, the poor quality of raw water leads to the need for elimination of dissolved organic matter and micropollutants.

This requires that any clarification process to be assisted by oxidation technologies and by the introduction of other steps, such as activated carbon adsorption.

Oxidation can be carried out in two steps depending on the degree of contamination:

  • PRE-OXIDATION: oxidizes organic and inorganic matter, namely iron and manganese, molecules responsible for bad odors and flavors, and also allows a pre-disinfection of water.
  • INTERMEDIATE OXIDATION: Promotes the oxidation of micropollutants, such as pesticides, toxins and other molecules that are subsequently removed in activated carbon filters.

There are several technologies available for these treatment steps:

  • OZONIZATION: through the installation of MAOZONEtech systems
  • CHLORINATION: sodium or calcium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide (chlorine dioxide generator), hypochlorous acid (hypochlorous acid generator).

The great advantage of ozone technology over chlorinated products is that it does not form by-products from the reaction, such as trihalomethanes and organochlorines, products which are considered to be carcinogenic. In addition, it improves the coagulation/flocculation process, increasing the yields of the decantation and filtration processes.

Clarification processes remove the mineral and organic matter in suspension (SS) from the raw water, they also remove part of the dissolved organic and inorganic matter capable of being precipitated and/or coagulated.

Several technologies are available depending on the concentration and type of contaminants present in raw water:

  • Coagulation/flocculation.
  • Conventional and lamellar decanting.
  • MAFLOTtech for dissolved air flotation (DAF) processes.
  • Filtration in gravitational or pressurized sand beds, fast or slow.
  • Ultra-Filtration in membranes through MAUFPUREtech systems. It is a compact solution for the removal of contaminants with dimensions greater than 0.02 micron, including suspended organic and inorganic matter and colloidal and microorganisms, resulting in high quality water.

Ultrafiltration can be used instead of filtration in sand and activated carbon and/or as a measure to obtain a higher quality of water. Moinhos Água e Ambiente designs and manufactures its own UF units, which it implements and markets, according to the needs of each case.

Reverse osmosis is another way to produce quality water, responding to growing water needs for human and industrial consumption.

Moinhos Água e Ambiente designs and manufactures complete water desalination systems, MAROPUREtech, through reverse osmosis membranes. Based on the characteristics of the water to be treated and the desired water quality, Moinhos Água e Ambiente draws the entire treatment line, before and after reverse osmosis, selecting the equipments and membranes that are best suited to each case. MAROPUREtech , can produce drinking water from:

  • Salt water, for the elimination of salts (desalination).
  • Brackish water, for the elimination of salts (desalination).
  • Fresh water for the elimination of specific contaminants such as: radioactivity, nitrates or fluorides.

Some processes are specifically designed to remove undesirable elements such as: manganese, nitrates, heavy metals, hardness …

One technology capable of treating water with this type of pollutants is ion exchange technology. This technology basically consists of a filter, in which the filling medium is a specific resin for the contaminant to be removed:

  • Demineralizers
  • Diffusers
  • Decalcifiers

Disinfection is the final step of a water treatment plant and is essential because it ensures the elimination of all pathogenic microorganisms from the water.

This step is aimed at two effects: the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms from the water and a residual disinfectant to safeguard any contamination between the point of treatment and the point of consumption.

Several disinfectants are used, with technologies such as:

  • MAOZONEtech Ozonization
  • UV Radiation
  • Chlorination: sodium or calcium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide (chlorine dioxide generators) and hypochlorous acid (hypochlorous acid generators).
